The Catholic Saint Anthony of Padua is associated with the Dominican spirit, Papa Legba. His Feast day is June 13. In Dominican voodoo, the Loa Papa Legba is the cosmic keeper as he also is in the Haitian Voodoo tradition. At religious ceremonies and rituals he is saluted first, even though he is not a Loa spirit that usually mounts initiated individuals. The Loa, Papa Legba is the principle spiritual leader of all the Loa from the 21 Divisions. He is seen as an old man barely able to walk straight when he arrives in possession and sometimes wears a plantation style straw hat and when he takes possession of an initiate, they're given a cane to help him walk. When this Loa spirit arrives to a religious ceremony, he will be given a cup of red wine and also a cigar smoke. Like all of the Loa spirits, there are various types of food offerings that this spirit enjoys. Papa Legba enjoys spiritual offerings such as rum, red wine, candies and bread. He is also the patron of finding lost items. Papa Legba is often times petitioned to find lost items, to find an individual a new job or to even bring back a lost love. He usually responds very quickly with the appropriate spiritual offering, but he will also require his payment that you promised him if he granted your petition or prayer request. If you're not initiated into the mysteries of the "21 Divisions," you can spiritually petition Papa Legba by setting up a spiritual altar and by placing a statue of San Antonio De Padua on it with his favorite food offerings, a glass of rum and a white candle.
