The Indian Division - Archangel Raphael

Archangel Raphael

One of the most interesting parts of the 21 Divisions is the Indian Division which consists of various indigenous Indian spirits native to the Caribbean. The Indian Division of the Dominican voodoo religious tradition has the most venerated spirits within it. The Indian Division is often referred to as the aqua Dulce Division (Sweet Water) and these spirits often work with the element of water. The Archangel Raphael is associated with the Indian Division and is known by the name of Tin Dio Alagwe. The leaders of this Agua Dulce Division are Anacaona and Caonabo. During the primary initiation into the mysteries of Dominican voodoo called "Bautizo", the new initiate is taken to a river to receive the "Punto" (Point) of this magical spirit division. The point bestows clarity, clarifies spiritual abilities, prosperity, and healing. The Indian spirits tribes that are usually served are the Taino Indians, although there was other lesser-known Indian tribes on the island of Hispaniola that can spiritually manifest as well. The spirits of this very special and unique division are served by offering them sweet fruit, candles, fresh water and fragrant types of sweet incense. It is believed that both of these two Indians were captured and executed by early Spanish explorers to the Dominican Republic and now their spirits are a part of the 21 Division pantheon. The Indian spirit Anacaona is now venerated by practitioners of the Dominican Voodoo and is believed to be one of the spiritual paths of the Loa, Anaisa Pye. The Indian spirit goddess is petitioned by pouring sweet smelling perfumes over her statute and around the river area during sacred rituals. This spirit also enjoys the taste of beer and prefers red candles when petitioning her for special spiritual requests. The spirit, Tin Djo Alagwe is also a very popular spirit from the 21 Division. This spirit is associated with healing and the river's water as well. The spirit Tin Djo Alagwe prefers light blue and pink candles as an offering when petitioning him for any special spiritual request. There are many other Indian spirits associated with the Dominican voodoo religious tradition as well and each has their own unique and favorite types of spiritual offerings. Spiritual altars of this division are usually kept separate from the other divisions. The mysteries of the Indian Division are usually kept inside of a clay ceramic jar that is filled with river water, seven stones and the scent of sweet-smelling perfumes and seven flowers.
